Review | Wild guide
Personally, I have abseiled rock faces, built rafts and explored the intricate cave network on Dartmoor- a place where adventure is but a stones throw away.
It's highly recommended as a place to explore, experience and enjoy, whatever the time of year. That said, it's important to respect what is essentially, a wild open space - the weather can change rapidly and mist can descend quickly on the moors and navigation then becomes difficult if not impossible without a GPS. Always take suitable clothing, safety equipment and water - and tell someone where you are going and your anticipated time of arrival home.
We reach South Devon and the many delights of this stunning stretch of coastline. Sandy shores, tidal creeks and four river estuaries provide the perfect environment for wildlife watching and traversing the water by canoe or kayak.
Through the Quantocks - the ideal terrain for mountain biking and hiking to the county of Somerset and through to Dorset with it's shingle shores and world famous Jurassic cliffs.
As the book draws to a close we find a list of Ordnance Survey grid references for easy identification of the suggested routes and the respective page number of the book that it relates to.
Overall this is a fantastic guide; it is presented brilliantly, it's sympathetic to the environment which it champions and it is clear, concise and easy to understand.
The opening text of each chapter describes each area beautifully and the list of things to do, with a paragraph on each followed by contact details for places to stay or hire equipment, map references and timescales to complete a route. It is very well executed; simple, but extremely effective.
The images inspire and let the mind wander, dreaming of those places and planning the next trip away. Not far from home we find locations we have never considered, never knew existed and certainly never visited.
Wild guide is a brilliant companion for local adventurers, families and visitors to the South West who truly want to experience the outdoors. For planning ahead, it deserves a place in your reference library but moreover, find room in your rucksack for a copy and remind yourself of those hidden gems whilst you travel on your journey across the South West.
